Derbyshire EGB Newsletter

Here is our Newsletter for July 2008.

FROM THE CHAIR
Hi everyone!
Hope all is going well for you this season, so far.
We still have a few of our Social Rides left, so get your entries in and I’ll see you there!
Associate Members please remember to prefix your membership number on entry forms with
“AM” and get your cards signed by the organiser of each ride.
Bethan needs articles for the next newsletter, so if you have any ride reports, for sale items etc
please e-mail Bethan at: bethan_emily@yahoo.co.uk or ring her on 01335 330208 before 1st September.
Any photos can be sent to Catherine Wheatcroft, preferably by e-mail: cmw@wheatcroft.info for
her to put on the Derbyshire website.
On a more serious note, you will find a list of helpers included in this newsletter, please check to see if your name is there.
As we have had so few volunteer helpers for our rides so far this season, we have been forced to
allocate members to the remainder of our rides. If your ride is not suitable for you, please
contact the organiser ASAP and choose another ride.
Remember, without helpers we can’t have rides, and without rides the Derbyshire Group could not
continue.
Jackie and Del

ED’S NOTE
Well, so far the season’s gone well for me and Rashiek. No eliminations yet (famous last words!)
and we’re both still alive so we must be doing something right! Summer’s upon us so we’ll all be
looking forward to sand, sea and sunburn (well, maybe not the sunburn but it happens to all of us).
It’s been nice to see people on rides and have a chat about the newsletter and other stuff. The
Shirley Ride’s coming up so I’ll be helping at that so I hope to see some of you there!
Bethan xxx

NEWS FROM LINDUM
The “Peak Ponies” won the Team Spirit at
Lindum on Thursday 24 July in a hotly
contested race. The finish was one of the
closest ever with four teams going out on the
last leg within two minutes of each other
after completing 75 miles.
Team riders – First leg – Jessica Strong on
Sorhez Amir, second rider – Sarah Whiteley
on Phineus, third Janice Clare on Sassan,
fourth Flick Edmeston on Floriferouz.
Ruth Chadwick did the ride of her life to
come fourth out of 16 starters in the
Aerborn Lindum Spirit – 170 km over three
days in the blistering heat. Craig Chadwick
deserves a special mention in this paragraph
as he not only crewed Ruth for three days,
but was also Top chef d’equipe for the Team
Spirit on the Thursday – some people prefer their holidays to be a little less stressful Craig.
James Dickenson added to Derbyshire’s success by winning the top Junior Rider award, for best
results over all four days.
We hope to have full reports on member’s successes and experiences at Lindum in the next
newsletter as well as lots more photos.

PEAK DISTRICT RIDE REPORT
I think that Saturday 17 May must have been one of the coldest days of spring but we had plenty
of entries so there were lots of very shivery people standing around at the new venue. Life would also have been improved if the landowner had told the farmer who had rented the grazing that we were going to use it for our ride which may have stopped him fertilising it very vigorously the week before!

Another last-minute panic was the result of a phone call from Peak Park earlier in the week, just checking if I knew that approximately 200 marathon runners would be using the trail on the
Saturday as well as our horses… did I think there would be any problems! I can’t blame anybody
but myself for this as I had only informed the Peak Park at the last minute that our ride was
taking place whereas the runners had been booked for months.

After frantically consulting maps and trying to work out what times riders and runners would be
at various places, Trish and I managed to come up with a manageable solution. The route was
changed (yes… I know it was longer) and we sent everyone off half an hour later than usual and
anti-clockwise. I also dispatched Janice Clare to a major potential flash point up at Friden car
park (the start of the half marathon) where she exercised a mixture of charm and steely
determination and managed to keep everyone happy. I owe you for that one Janice.

We were also lucky enough to have lots of prizes on offer, courtesy of BETA. These included a
Janice Clare on Sassan (Darius) in the hot seat, waiting to set off, with chef d’equipe Craig synchronizing watches bridle, several bottles of Net-Tex electrolytes, half a dozen pairs of very desirable MacWet gloves and lots of vouchers for a new horse feed from the makers of Speedi-Beet.
We worked out the results by French Formula (at least Tracey Edge did whilst also managing to keep immaculate order in the secretary’s tent with the aid of Trish). Prizewinners in the various classes are underlined in the results below.

All of the helpers worked incredibly hard and I can’t thank them enough. The weather was damp,
misty and very cold, but everyone remained helpful and smiling… at least while I was watching.
Another plus point is that the re-surfacing of the trails which Peak Park had to carry out a couple
of years ago as a result of 4x4 and motorbike usage has now started to mellow a bit. Most of the loose stones have now been washed away or to the side of the tracks and several of the tracks
are now becoming grassed over again, at least in the middle, so by next year they should have
improved even more and should have become a lot more horse-friendly.

Hope to see lots of you again next year. Promise we will have our smiley vets again!!
Flick

ASHOVER RIDE POSTPONED

Unfortunately the Ashover Ride which was due to take place on 16 August has had to be
postponed due to Julie Brown moving house around that time. If the opportunity arises the ride will be held later in the year.

SHIPLEY PARK – CHANGE OF DATE

The Shipley Park ride date has been changed to Sunday 26 October because the Park had already
been booked on 19 October.

7 DERBYSHIRE RIDERS IN NW TEAM AT LUDLOW

Derbyshire are well represented in the Inter-Regional championships which will take place at
Ludlow on the first weekend in August. The 7 who have been selected to take part are Annette
Masterson, Ann Harrison, Brett Corcoran, Molly Corcoran, Melanie Rhodes, Bethan Reeves and Kay Counter. Flick Edmeston and Pat Guerin are joint chefs and will travel down on Friday. We hope to run a full report in the next newsletter.

SILLY HORSE LAWS

• It's illegal in Marion, South Carolina, to tickle a female under her chin with a feather
duster to get her attention while she's riding a horse.
• In New York City, it is illegal to open or close an umbrella in the presence of a horse.
• It is illegal to fish from horseback in Washington D.C, Colorado, and Utah.
Tennessee prohibits riders from lassoing fish.
• A British law states that an Englishman must not sell a horse to a Scotsman.
• Horses are required to wear hats in hot weather in Rasario, Argentina.
• In Guernee, Illinois, it is illegal for women weighing more than 200 pounds to ride
horses in shorts.
• In Kentucky, it is illegal for a woman to appear in a bathing suit on a highway unless she
is escorted by at least two police officers; armed with a club; or lighter than 90
pounds or heavier than 200 pounds. The ordinance also specifically exempts female
horses from such restrictions.
• In London, England, law required taxi drivers to carry a bale of hay on top of their
cabs to feed their horses. The law was in force until 1976.
• In Raton, New Mexico, it is illegal for a woman to ride horseback down a public street
with a kimono on.
• A misworded ordinance in Wolf Point, Montana: "No horse shall be allowed in public
without its owner wearing a halter."
• In Omega, New Mexico, every woman must "be found to be wearing a corset" when
riding a horse in public. A doctor is required to inspect each woman to make sure that
she is complying with the law.
• Pennsylvania law states: “Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him
must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the
countryside, and let the horses pass. If the horses appear skittish, the motorist must
take his car apart, piece by piece, and hide it under the nearest bushes.”
• In Hartsville, Illinois, you can be arrested for riding an ugly horse.
• In the state of Queensland, Australia, it is still constitutional law that all pubs must
have a railing outside for patrons to tie up their horse.
• Pattonsburg, Missouri, Revised Ordinances, 1884: "No person shall hallo, shout, bawl,
scream, use profane language, dance, sing, whoop, quarrel, or make any unusual noise or
sound in such manner as to disturb a horse."
• Marshalltown, Iowa, it is against the law for a horse to eat a fire hydrant.
