Kay's Awards 2006
Derbyshire EGB Newsletter

Here is our newsletter for April 2007.

From The Chair
Phew! I think Spring is here at last, all that mud was driving me mad! It made pushing the wheelbarrow downhill to the muck-heap a feat of endurance! Hope you are all fit and raring to get into the riding season – though I know some of you have already started with a vengeance!
Hope to see you all out and about, don’t forget to have your trophy cards signed by ride organisers, even if you’re an associate rider, you could win an award at the end of the year. Happy Riding.
Congratulations to Julie Brown (Derbys Committee member) and Neil Brown on the birth of their son Oliver Tevis on 7.2.07.
Jackie

Ed's Note
At present I am struggling to overcome the problems of no radio communications at Foremark (Raynet are covering the Sheffield marathon) and no vets at Peak District, but I am hopeful that these problems will get sorted out in time!
We would love to see as many of you as possible supporting the Derbyshire Team Effort at the Inter-Group competition which is being held at Peak District again this year. Last year our Young Riders won their section and we came second overall. I’m sure we can beat those Cheshire plains dwellers this year – they have held the trophy for far too long!!. Don’t confuse this with the Inter-Regional Competition (details below) which is a much more formal affair and is being held again at Ludlow.
Arnie and Sandra Flowers have again generously given us permission to use the harness-racing field at Pikehall for the Peak District venue with FREE camping and corralling and I am going to run Santa’s Summer Ride on the Sunday from the same place. This is to give all those brave children and their stalwart parents a chance to do a lead rein ride without turning blue with cold and we are also hoping to award some mystery prizes.

A couple of congratulations – Maureen Lees on her first attempt at ride organising – it all went very smoothly, and Rachel Dennett and her new horse, Emmaley, on a successful completion at their first CR.
I’m glad to say we seem to have quite a few new members this year so please look out for them and be ready to give them a helping hand.

I can now be e-mailed at home, so any articles, photos etc. can be sent to felicity@ballidon.orangehome.co.uk

Inter-Regional Competition - Take up the Challenge!
This year’s inter-regional challenge is taking place at Ludlow on Saturday 14 July and YOU could be part of the North West team.

We need riders from Cheshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and North Wales to make up a winning team. The North West has held the Inter-Regional trophy twice in the past and came third last year, only missing second place by a couple of points so we are determined that it will come home with us again in 2007.
We know we have a lot of talented horses and riders in the area and this is a fantastic chance for you to experience the fun and excitement of being part of a team effort. We think there will be a full range of classes on offer from 32km CR to 100km ER so there is a chance for everyone to compete.
Anyone who wants to take part should send a copy of their mastercard and 2007 vet sheets to Pat Guerin by the end of June and should have successfully completed a CR in June, preferably at the Peak District on 30 June.
We will provide team shirts and possibly cooler rugs for all who take part, so if you know a supplier who is willing to provide a set of rugs at a reasonable price (preferably free), we would love to hear from you. Back-up will be available for those of you who haven’t got a crew as well as help and advice.
Up to date team information, including long-lists and short lists will be posted on the Cheshire EGB website.

If you are interested, all you have to do is contact one of the people listed below.

Chefs d-Equipe – Pat Guerin and Flick Edmeston.

Derbyshire Group Website
Catherine Wheatcroft, our new PR officer, has generously “volunteered” to take over the running and designing of the group website (well I asked her and she didn’t say no!). Catherine is a professional website designer but is going to run the site for us for free – so please remember to express your appreciation to Catherine and her horse Buster when you see them at a ride.

Vacancy for Group Liason Officer
Tracey Brown has unfortunately had to resign from this post due to family commitments. If anyone would like to take it over and needs further details of what it entails, please contact Jackie Rose or Sarah Whiteley.

Helper's Rota
Note for new members – helpers are needed in order for us to be able to run all our rides and each member is expected to help at one ride per year.
This is the list of helpers which we have drawn up for 2007. If you would like to help at a ride other than the one to which you have been allocated, please contact Rachel Dennett who will make the necessary alterations.

Please contact your ride organiser roughly two weeks before the ride in order to be allocated your job for the day – remember some jobs are more interesting than others and first come, first served. You will get mileage points for the PR distance on the day, plus refreshments.

Remember, you can always help at MORE than one ride, if you wish!!

Ride Report - Dark Peak Ride
For the last couple of years I have spent many hours driving around the Derbyshire countryside – my mission – to find somewhere suitable for an EGB venue. Flick will testify that my fascination with car parks borders on the obsessive! Derwent Valley is a lovely spot but the parking is limited and Hope Valley cement works was one of the finest car parks ever but they decided to put portacabins on it this year. I still can’t believe that the venue for the Dark Peak ride was AT THE BOTTOM OF MY DRIVE and we only noticed it in February.
Maureen Lees and I decided to share the responsibility of “ride organiser”. Some may argue that Maureen got a raw deal – while she spent 5 hours in a trailer at the (rather windy) venue assisted by my 5 year old son, I manned a checkpoint with Kath Silson which just happened to be in a very sheltered spot next to a lovely café serving bacon sandwiches.
We had 50 entries, 20 of whom were non members which we were very pleased with. We had a choice of routes, 9 miles or 15 miles. Both routes used some of the southern section of the Pennine Bridleway.  The longer route also took riders from Mount Famine over Ollersett Moor and back down the Sett Valley trail to Thornsett before returning to the venue via Lantern Pike. Lots of hills and great views for those who took the long route.
Overall the route rode well and it was great to see so many happy faces back at the venue. Kath and I also had a lady come and tell us that she was really impressed at how courteous our riders had been when passing her children - comments like this make a ride organiser’s day.

Once again a huge thank you to everyone who helped out with the ride, including Martin and his team of marshalls and not forgetting my poor husband who ended up as official photographer. We really would not be able to hold these events without your support.

Rider Needed - Matlock Area
Natalie Treadgold is looking for someone to ride one of her horses, particularly coming out and doing some endurance/pleasure rides with her. She’s not looking for a contribution in time or money, just someone who would like to come out and do some rides and if they want ride in between too. She has horse transport and would just like to take her two mares out together. The only catch is that they are not really novice rides, 15hh and 15.3hh mares, nice natured, just a bit strong. If there is anyone out there who maybe interested please contact Natalie on 07702 832038.
